Philanthropy

Huntsman Cancer Foundation

In December 2012, Sigma Chi designated the Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) as its sole preferred philanthropic partner. On April 12, 2013, Sigma Chi members presented the millionth dollar raised for cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) to Significant Sig and Order of Constantine Sig Jon M. Huntsman, Sr., Pennsylvania 1959.

On June 15, 2015, Sigma Chi made the largest commitment by a men’s fraternity, with an $11 million pledge to HCF. In February 2020, Sigma Chi fulfilled that pledge.

Our Events

Sigma Fry:

Originating as a chapter delivery service that would deliver to you at any time freshly fried chicken nuggets, french fries, mozzarella sticks, and oreos, Sigma Fry has transitioned to selling Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwiches on the Cut outside Doherty Hall. You can find us on the cut selling chicken sandwiches any given week of the Fall and Spring semesters on either Thursday or Friday.

Derby Days:

Our signature philanthropic event, Derby Days is a week-long festival of fun and philanthropy supporting the Huntsman Cancer Research Institute. Holding the fence for a week, opening bounce houses on the cut, hosting a date auction, having athletic competitions and putting on other events with local sponsors, Derby Days brings together the campus community and supports an amazing cause. Every year, our chapter raises tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research and is nationally recognized as one of the most philanthropic chapters in the country. Chapter Engagement

Greek Sing:

In the spring semester we partner with a sorority and we compete against other Greek organizations to put on an abridged version of a musical. In addition to putting on a show, Greek Sing is the largest philanthropic event at Carnegie Mellon collectively raising tens of thousands of dollars for different charities. In 2022, we ranked second among fraternities in the philanthropy category raising over $5,900.

Intramural Sports:

In addition to strengthening our community through our philanthropic endeavors, we also pride ourselves on our engagement in Intramural Sports. Sigma Chi was founded by members of the Carnegie Mellon club rugby team and our athletic origins remain to this day. We participate in intramural flag football, volleyball, basketball and softball. We are the reigning champions of the intramural flag football league and look forward to expanding our horizons into more intramurals.
